About Me

Hi! My name is Shirley. I run a small creative business called The Orange Windmill, where I work tirelessly on my handbound journals in my home studio located in lovely Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

I have loved creating things since I was a little girl. I was always sketching, painting, cross-stitching, making lists, organizing other people's messes, and imagining what I would be when I grew up.

I have always loved paper and books. The best thing about going back to school for me was that I would get a binder full of brand new lined paper - filled with possibilities!

I taught myself bookbinding in 2011, and I am constantly learning about my craft. Bookbinding is an interesting art form, I am always researching different types of binding. My next big ambition is to learn how to use the vintage sewing machine I got from my gramma.

I started The Orange Windmill when I had used up the last page of my journal in 2011. I was looking around, trying to find one that I liked, and my husband, Jeffery, said, "Why don't you just make one?" And once I made one, I just couldn't stop! As I have delved into the handmade community, I have discovered a passion in me to open people's eyes to the wonderful world of handmade items. I see people all around me who go to the franchise "big-box" stores to pick up the cheapest item for the people they love - cheapest in terms of quality and price. My dream is to have more and more people recognize the value in handmade items, and support artists and artisans.
